World Food Day in October is designated to pray for the world's hungry and support them with a special collection. At St. Rose, we hold a prayer service after mass and take up a collection to donate to help support our local food bank, TAP in an effort of feeding the world's hungry.
National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation. St. Rose School also celebrates with special service projects such as care packages for military service men and women, gifts to our parish shut-ins, and recognizing our volunteers who do so much for our school.
At Christmas time, St. Rose students bring gifts for Baby Jesus. Students learn the story of the 3 Wisemen and the gifts they brought to baby Jesus. Every student who brings a gift gets to open a gift, and the gifts of clothing, books, toys, etc. are then donated to our own local Baby Boutique in Denison, Iowa where local families in need of items for infants can go to pick up what they need.
Our students visit the area nursing homes and assisted living facilities throughout the school year. We sing to the residents and remember them with cards and small gifts during Catholic Schools Week.
